Vizio Introduces its First Android Tablet, Cell Phone

Vizio announced its plans today for a new Android mobile phone, as well as an Android Tablet, both which will be on display at the CES this week.

According to Vizio, the devices are scheduled for release in the late second quarter of 2011. Judging by the intended release date, it would appear one or both devices may run on the long-awaited Honeycombe operating system. Both devices will have full Google Android Market support.

At CES 2010, Vizio announced that it was extending its Vizeo Internet Apps (VIA) platform to nine HDTVs and to its Blu-Ray player. It also said that it had plans to grow beyond the early apps.

This year Vizio is expected to announce its updated VIA platform, which will now be based on Google TV, and will extend support to other devices, too. The support will include the upcoming VIA Tablet and the VIA smartphone as well.

According to the company, both the VIA Tablet and Via smartphone will run on Android, with the VIA Plus interface overlay on top of the operating system.

The VIA Smartphone

The VIA smartphone will consist of a 3G antenna, 1Ghz processor and a 4-inch capacitative touchscreen with 480 x 854 pixel resolutions.

The device will consist of an accelerometer, GPS, MicroSA card slot, a front-facing camera for video chat, as well as a 5-megapixel rear camera with flash for photos and HD for video.

The phone will also pack a mini-HDMI jack for outputting 720p HD video.

The phone’s dimensions will measure 2.4×4.8×0.5 inches and it will weigh 0.26 pounds.

The VIA Tablet

The VIA tablet consists of a 1GHz processor. It has an 8-inch, 1024×768 capacitative touchscreen, which is the same as the resolutions of the current iPad.

The tablet will also include 802.11n Wi-Fi, an accelerometer, GPS, 2GB of internal storage, front-facing camera for video chat and a MicroSD card slot for additional storage.

The device will also consist of a micro-USB port, and may have three speakers for delivering stereo audio, no matter the orientation the tablet is held in.

The tablet will measure 6.5×8.2×0.5 inches and it will weigh 1.2 pounds.

Vizio has yet to announce pricing or carrier plan information on both the devices.
