Twitter Sells Your Old Tweets

It has been reported recently that Twitter has sold a good number of old tweets to a marketing firm named DataSift. The firm purchased old tweets from Twitter with a view to analyze them for marketing purposes.

According to the Mail Online, DataSift is appeared to be the first company that got access to the users’ old tweets, which go back two years. Interestingly, there are more than 1,000 companies which are still on the waiting list for DataSift.

It has been confirmed by DataSift that the report of its purchasing old tweets from Twitter is true. However, Twitter couldn’t be reached for immediate comment. The marketing firm has announced a product named DataSift Historics that enables companies take out insights and trends related to brands, businesses, financial markets, news and public opinion, according to DataSift representative. Public tweets would be analyzed by Datasift, not private ones. It is important to note here that if a user deletes a tweet, it would be deleted from DataSift’s archive as well.

Twitter is monetizing its archive by selling old tweets. Until this time, Twitter’s all focus has been on boosting revenues by advertising to its 100 million plus active monthly users instead of selling its data, but this is a huge initiative taken by Twitter this time.

A good bunch of Twitter’s revenue generates via advertising. Being a private company, Twitter doesn’t reveal its finances as yet. Still, eMarketer estimates that Twitter will earn around $259.9 million in the ongoing year, while an expected $399.5 million in the coming year.

The latest report will certainly tickle the privacy advocates, whose focus have so far been on Google and Facebook. Both these companies have been accused of misusing consumer data without the knowledge of consumers.
