Should Students & Teachers Be Facebook ‘Friends’

Dixie Jarchow signs in to Facebook a few times every day. Jarchow, who is teaching science in North Fond du Lac at Horace Mann High School, searches photographs of friends, changes status detail and posts message on accounts of relations.

However it is reasonable to wonder whether she becomes friends and socialize with her students.

Some people are advised by police corporations that becoming friends with student is not quite a good idea as if the teacher notices them carrying out illegal task, she would have to report them as she has a partial responsibility over them. However as Jarchow notes that she has a chat room on Facebook to communicate with her students on science topics, it is quite useful to create such chat groups.

Social networks such as Facebook and others are becoming highly popular and the topic of the teachers and the students becoming friends on these sites has been a debatable subject for a long time.

One of the must of using Facebook in the District of Fond du Lac School it is required that no matter what the circumstance is teachers do not friend their students. In addition, the director of the building should be informed about the use while being provided with the data such as log-in name and the corresponding password of all accounts which are school based.

Of course those private Facebook account owner teachers cannot be asked to provide such details but the District of the School and the Education Association of Fond du Lac advise teachers not to friend their students. John Whitsett states that if teachers do not take this advice carefully then it is very easy for them to get into trouble.

Teaching tool

For teachers who are seeking for professional ways of using Facebook for educational purposes they should always make sure that it is a school or education related page. Of course, similarly to any other topic many different views are out forward on the topic whether students and the teachers should become friends on Facebook.

Richard Zimman from Ripon School stated that as long as it is used properly, then Facebook is one of the greatest teaching devices to be used. The Facebook account of the district is commonly visited and it is accessible from website of the school which means that parents, students and teachers from the schools in the area, relatives and many others can become friends.

Also what should be noted that, as there are so many regulations people may wonder that everything on the page is posted by the district, however that is not the case. The postings are open so any member can post on the page and until now 99% of the posts have not raised any issues. If posting was considered as an attack or it does not state the truth and the facts, such posts are replied by educational responses which prove the importance of engaging and teaching people rather than making them become silent.
