iPhone 4 Users to Get More Video Chat Friends with MyTouch

T-Mobile’s release of the new MyTouch will bring in more chat options for iPhone 4 users whose video chats would otherwise be limited to fellow iPhone 4 users alone.

Pitching in to bridge the gap would be Yahoo Messenger, which would be running on both phones.

This is in line with T-Mobile’s recent announcement that this new edition of the MyTouch – an HTC phone that runs on the Android OS – is built with two cameras to enable users to video chat with more types of people easily, which means that users will not only be able to video chat with other MyTouch owners, but with PC users and users of compatible phones as well.

While T-Mobile didn’t really specify what these “compatible phones” were, Yahoo’s Mobile Business Development and Partnerships Vice President Michael Shim said that it would allow you to video chat with any phone featuring a two-way camera like the iPhone 4.

This, however, didn’t mean that phones with one-way cameras won’t allow users to video chat. These people would still be able to video chat with others, but the catch is that they’d have to constantly flip between the front (for the screen) and the back (for the camera) to alternately see the person they’re talking to and take videos of themselves, respectively. Right now, however, there are very few phones that feature a two-way camera.

The MyTouch will use Android 2.2 for its OS, and users will be able to video chat with others using either Wi-Fi or HSPA+ network. The release of the MyTouch would make it the second phone to function on the operator’s fast HSPA+ network. In line with this, T-Mobile is expanding its HSPA+ coverage. So far it includes the San Francisco Area. This year it expects to cover as much 100 metropolitan areas and 200 million more people.

Launched with the iPhone 4 was FaceTime, Apple’s videophone application. This, however, is limited to video chats with other iPhone 4 users.

In addition to the reinvented video chat function, the new edition of MyTouch is also home to a host of other features. This includes, but is not limited to, the integration of the T-Mobile Faves Gallery, a brand new versatile media player, and the Swype on-screen keyboard software.

MyTouch’s release is timely, as T-Mobile says that it’s going to go on sale in time for the holidays. T-Mobile, however, did not disclose anything specific as to the price.
