Directory Opus 8.1

Directory Opus 8.1 offers numerous capabilities found in other applications namely, image conversion, ftp, zip capabilities, image and file viewer, slideshows, folder synchronization, complex file searches inclusive of metadata searches, and many more. It gives easy access to prevalent utilities such as Google Desktop Search software or GDS (a free download from Google, and Nero burning software. Important features are listed here.

Lister Style layouts are style tabs seen on the top above ‘Location’ field. There are seven ways of viewing folders by default, and you can save your layout, which is then available in the current window and subsequent windows that you open. The dual-horizontal view is useful for those working with a single monitor, as it gives two panes, one above the other, with the option for dragging files from and to different locations on the computer or over the network.

Location tabs present at each pane’s bottom allow you to open many locations at once. You can switch between tabs without having to lose files or folders that you have selected. You can simply double-click upon a blank portion to add a tab, and double-click the tab to take it off. Mouse or keyboard can be used for the purpose. Ctrl-right and Ctrl-left takes you from and to tabs, in the appropriate direction. The keyboard shortcuts, Alt-right and Alt-left take you backward and forward. Mouse clicks and shortcut keys are customizable.

With a number of ways for customizing Directory Opus 8.1, preferences window is slightly daunting. There is a list of topics on the left, with each having a tabbed list of pages at the right of the screen. Special codes are given at the screen’s bottom for customizing the display, which help you customize your layout.

There are many toolbars in Directory Opus 8.1, and similar to windows Word, the toolbars with vertical dotted lines can be moved around at your will. With more local drives and network shares that you have mapped, toolbars become increasingly helpful. There is no need to scroll up and down at the drive list pane, as your requested drive pops at the press of a button.

‘Favorites’ of Directory Opus 8.1 are similar to those in the Internet Explorer, or the Bookmarks in Netscape, and they are drive or folder locations allowing you to directly go to your favorite or most-visited location. They can be edited and organized to folders, and you can keep as many as you require. At the bottom there is a list of the last ten places visited by you.

The viewer pane is one of the view options, which appears at the right of the window. It displays stills, movies, text inclusive of word files, and displays binary info in case the file format is not viewable. This is a useful feature as it supports the lesser-known formats like targa (.tga) files. In case, you don’t prefer the viewer pane, hovering the mouse over a file, will bring forth a thumbnail with detailed information of the required file.

Image conversion is a useful feature, allowing conversion of one or more images to other formats, inclusive of Photoshop files, even without the Photoshop software on the system. For instance, screens in .psd format may be converted to .bmp format using this tool. Resize and rotate buttons are also available. The ‘All’ button allows you to multi-select files for conversion at once.

Directory Opus 8.1 is a replacement for Windows Explorer, with a wide array of useful features.
