It was on January 13 when China Unicom started offering the Apple’s iPhone 4S in the country. China Telecom waited for almost two months to receive approval from the local regulators to sell the device. The Cupertino-based company has wisely employed a dual-mode baseband to make certain that it won’t have to manufacture separate device to operate on both frequencies. This is an interesting initiative taken by the company to make sure that as soon as carriers got approval, they instantly stock supplies of the iPhone 4S.

According MICGadget, orders in Shanghai and Beijing have already crossed 10,000 and 20,000 units respectively, which are much more than anticipated by the carrier. China Telecom offers a complete range of iPhone 4S versions – including 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, with price starting at $0 RMB on select contracts.

With the today’s announcement, it is obvious that China Mobile – the world’s largest mobile carrier – is the only major operator in China that is not offering Apple’s smartphone to its large customer-base.

Still, considering the ‘worldphone’ capabilities of the iPhone 4S, China Mobile is enjoying more than 15 million iPhone users, all of which use an unlocked iPhone on the carrier’s 2G networks due to its network incompatibility with the handset.
