Canon XL1S

Canon XL1S is a video recorder made for professionals which is specifically intended for transmission purposes. Its lens system can be interchanged with each other. It also features one CCD for each primary color: blue, red, and yellow. Canon XL1S achieves a better video quality than most video camcorders by incorporating cutting edge pixel shift technology and optical image stabilizer.

Setting up your Canon XL1S

The Canon XL1S has an adjustable viewfinder than can easily be attached to the camera by slipping it right into the holder and securing it by turning the locking screw. Take off the rear lens cap and the body cap before attaching the lens to the camera. Do this by aligning the red marks on the lens and the camera’s body before twisting it in a clockwise direction to lock it. To reduce background light flares, affix the lens hood at the end of the lens. If you plan to augment your onboard microphone with a custom-made one, just slip the microphone into its holder and connect it to the microphone input found at the right side of the Canon XL1S by the viewfinder bracket. If you foresee pursuing a physically demanding footage with your Canon XL1S, you can fasten the shoulder holder for extra support. The Canon XL1S also incorporates a shoulder strap, and a hand strap. Don’t forget to fully charge the cameras battery before using it. If you want to film while plugged into the wall, just slip the DC coupler into the battery compartment.

Recording video with your Canon XL1S

Canon XL1S saves your footage in a miniDV cassette. To load the miniDV cassette into your Canon XL1S, switch it on and press the eject button found at the rear right-hand side. This will open the cassette holder, letting you slip a fresh one in place. When the miniDV cassette is in place, shut the compartment door. There is a mode dial located at the left side of the camcorder that you can twist to automatically record a video. If you’re using a telephoto lens, pressing the T button on the camcorder body or the viewfinder bracket will allow you to zoom in on your subject. The W button lets you zoom out. The start button on your Canon XL1S also doubles up as the stop button.

Tweaking the audio

Since the Canon XL1S is a video camcorder for professionals, it has better audio than most run-of-the-mill models. Canon XL1S not only allows you to control the volume, you can also fine tune it with the left-right balance knob. It can handle four channels of audio, to access this feature, push the VCR set-up, choose the audio mode, and then pick the 12-bit, ST1 & ST2. If you only have one input, set the audio mode to the 16-bit per 48 kilohertz for best results.
