Blackberry’s PlayBook to Storm Medical Arena

Blackberry has announced its new tablet, “the Playbook” as an answer to the Apple’s iPad. They boast that this tablet has an impressive hardware and a new operating system i.e. Blackberry Tablet Operating System. This tablet will be promoted to a greater extent to the enterprise customers, such as health/ medical care systems and hospitals.

Blackberry mentioned about the medical community, without missing, during its keynote speech. They explained briefly about how the applications will be for the medical industry. They also quoted an example of a medical application that is used in the practice by the orthopedic surgeons. During this keynote address, RIM took the chance to show off the “Play book” from Blackberry, the first professional tablet as per RIM. One of the press releases gave a minor glimpse into the hopes of Blackberry, for giving the Playbook a feasible option for e- medical records, while bringing up their file transfer library function to the developers. For instance, a medical record app can be used attach the picture files to the medical record of a patient, provided with an option to preview or open the record, or see the list of accessible images before the medical record is downloaded to the smartphone i.e. Blackberry. The demand for mobile applications is ever increasing and they allow the customers a real time view into their business.

The key features of Blackberry Playbook include a 7 inch LCD, WSVGA, 1024 X 600, with a capacitative touch screen display. It supports Blackberry tablet operating system for symmetric multiprocessing. Dual High definition (HD) cameras are present, where 5MP is rear facing and 3 MP is front facing. It supports video recording of 1080p HD. MPEG, WMV, Div X video play back with 1080 HD video is an attractive feature. It has HDM1 video output along with MP3, WMA, and AAC audio playback. Connectivity of Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n are seen. It has connectors for micro USB, micro HDM1 and charging contacts. A flexible, open application platform with backup for adobe flash player 10.1, Web kit, HTML-5, adobe reader, Open GL. POSIX, Java, Adobe Mobile AIR is present. It has 1GB RAM with 1 GHz dual core processor. It runs a smooth operating kernel called QNX. For 3D gaming, the Playbook supports Open Gl.

The handset is portable, sleek or ultra thin, which measures about 5.1“x7.6“x0.4“ and weighs less than a pound. Other specifications and features of Blackberry Playbook will be revealed either before or on the date of the launch of this product. 3G and 4G models of Playbook may be launched in future by RIM. The cost of the gadget is still not announced. Hope the cost of it would not be very high so that it will be available for majority of gadget freaks.
