Asustek to Unveil New Tablet PCs

Asustek Computer will introduce two new tablet computers this month, one with a detachable keyboard and another with a sliding keyboard, according to Taiwan’s semi-official Central News Agency.

According to the report, Asustek will showcase a tablet PC at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which consists of a sliding keyboard and a 10-inch screen running on Google’s Android operating system.

Another tablet computer on display at the same show will consist of a detachable keyboard and will run on Windows.

Both products belong to the Asus Eee Pad product line.

According to analysts, users who do a lot of typing may favor detachable keyboards, but such devices will cost a lot more than the normal tablet computer, which in turn will make sales more difficult. Once such device, an Acer x86 tablet released last year, has struggled with costs.

Asustek last month said that they believed the non-Apple segment of the tablet market would reach around 10 million to 15 million units this year.

The company is striving to enter the market and hopes for a double-digit share of the global tablet PC market in 2011.
